Situated at the head of Derwentwater and surrounded by mountains, the majestic Borrowdale Valley is Glaramara’s home and office and they are determined to look after it.

The Glaramara Centre provides outdoor activities and skills courses for a range of clients – from students learning mountain craft to business executives getting to grips with the new world of corporate responsibility. Protecting the natural environment is all in a day’s work and the Glaramara team are keen to get the message across.
“We’ve reduced our food packaging and always encourage visitors and staff to recycle as much as possible. Our recycling rate has risen to over 40% in the last couple of years.” Outdoor instructor, Simon May
Energy efficiency is a priority. With CBEN’s support Glaramara secured loans from The Carbon Trust to invest in a new energy efficient boiler. Thermostatic heat controls have also been fitted and a new dehumidifier placed in the drying room. Energy costs have reduced substantially and CO2 emissions have been cut.
“CBEN helped us set priorities and procedures for improving environmental performance. We’ve achieved a lot and planning to do more in the future including helping to protect our amazing landscape and wildlife.” Glaramara Director Graham
The company’s on-going environmental projects include fitting water-saving devices and energy-saving lighting. Tree planting will also continue following advice from CBEN’s biodiversity experts.
