Renewable Energy Factsheet

Sources Of Information

The Energy Savings Trust provides guidance and grants for homes, businesses and transport to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbons dioxide emissions and encourage use of renewable energy, visit http://www.est.org.uk. They also provide guidance and publish a range of downloadable documents regarding energy efficiency in buildings, including building refurbishment and installing renewable technologies, visit http://www.est.org.uk/housingbuildings/renewables/

Carbon Trust helps businesses and public sector to cut carbon emissions and encourage low carbon technologies www.carbontrust.co.uk

Claren (Cumbria and Lancashire Community Renewables Initiative) has now been discontinued, but the website is still a useful source of information. Claren was aimed at community schemes but has local case studies and information on technologies to view at www.claren.org.uk

Low Luckens Organic Research Centre near Carlisle promotes sustainability and renewable energy through visits and demonstrations of their solar, wind and rainwater harvesting systems www.lowluckensfarm.co.uk

Ecotricity supplies only renewable electricity and invests in building new sources of green energy. Switch to Ecotricity's domestic or Small Business Rate at http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/switch/business.php

Cumbria Woodlands provides free advice and information for companies considering using wood as an energy source, they can be contacted on 01539 822140 or their website contains more information www.cumbriawoodlands.co.uk

Technologies
Technology
Suitable for.. 1
Estimated costs2 excluding grants
(see table below)
Wind turbines

Electricity
Can be grid connected to supply surplus electricity

- Up to 1kW will cost around £3,000 installed (enough to provide baseload domestic electricity such as fridge freezer and equipment on standby)
- 1.5kW to 6kW would cost £4,000 - £18,000 installed.
Solar Thermal
Hot water or space heating

Commonly used for domestic hot water, and for multi-occupancy building eg hotels & offices

£3,000 - £6,000 installed
Ground source heat pump
Space heating, most efficient for low temperature distribution eg underfloor heating

Water heating

Requires electricity supply (which could also be renewable) and an area of land for heat source; converts 1kW energy to around 4kW heat.
£10,000 for 8kW system
Air source heat pump
Space heating, most efficient for low temperature distribution eg underfloor heating

Water heating

Requires electricity supply (which could also be renewable); converts 1kW energy to around 4kW heat.
6kW system costs £3,500; 12kW system costs £6,000 excluding heat distribution eg radiators

Biomass
Space heating or heating & hot water
Boiler fuelled by wood chips, logs or pellets. 20kW system (suitable for 3-bed house) costs £5,000 installed
Small scale hydro
Electricity

Variable
1 Planning permission and/or Building Regulations approval may be required; contact the local planning authority.
2 Costs always vary depending on location and the size and type of system.
Grants - DTI Low Carbon Buildings
Launched on 1 April 2006, phase one of the DTI's low carbon buildings programme provides grants for microgeneration technologies to householders, community organisations, schools, public and not for profit sector and private businesses to demonstrate how energy efficiency and microgeneration can work hand in hand to create low carbon buildings. Find full details and applications forms at www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk

BUSINESS - Stream 2
Grant available
How?What for?
Stream 2A
40% (50% for SMEs) of total installation costs to a maximum of £100,000
Competitive bidding rounds every quarter
(7 total)
Only one grant is available per installation location, for one or more technology.

For simple retrofit or changes to existing building or small (<1,000m2) new building. Also suitable where time is of more importance than achieving a very low carbon building.

Stream 2B
40% (50% for SMEs) of total installation costs to a maximum of £1 millionCompetitive bidding rounds twice a year (3 total)Only one grant is available per installation location, for one or more technology.

New buildings & buildings undergoing major refurbishment - the outcome should be an exemplar low carbon building.

Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA)
The Governments ECA Scheme encourages businesses to purchase energy saving and water efficient equipment by allowing businesses to claim 100% first year capital allowances on investments in equipment against their taxable profits. Equipment must be selected from a wide range on the approved lists at www.eca.gov.uk such as heat pumps, solar, boilers, insulation, refrigeration, motors, lighting, bathroom fittings etc.
Energy Saving Trust
Enter your home postcode at http://www.est.org.uk/myhome/gid/ for grants and special offers for home improvements, appliances, insulation etc
Carbon Trust Energy-Efficiency Loans
Interest free loans for £5,000-£100,000 for SME's (small and medium sized enterprises) when you replace or upgrade your existing equipment with a more energy-efficient version eg lighting, boilers, insulation. View the eligibility criteria and find out how to apply at http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/energy/takingaction/loans.htm
Manufacturers And Installars
If applying for a Low Carbon Buildings grant, you must use a manufacturer and/or installer listed on their website at http://www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk/info/installers/find/installerfind

Envirolink Northwest produced the UK's first Microgeneration Directory in February 2006. The Microgeneration Directory provides a guide to the types of technologies available within the Northwest, (which include solar water heating, ground and air source heat pumps, biomass and combined heat and power (CHP), microCHP, fuel cells, small and building-mounted wind turbines, photovoltaic cells and small scale hydro), details of the companies which supply and install them and a series of case study examples. The directory is available to download free at
