Introduction - Environmental Awards - Definitions


At this stage it may be helpful to provide some basic definitions (from ISO 14001 2004) used in environmental management to help you understand the criteria above and guidance below.

Environment - Surroundings in which an organisation operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, floors, fauna, humans and their interrelation

Environmental Aspect - Element of an organisation's activities, products or services that can interact with the environment

Environmental Impacts - Any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partly resulting from an organisation's environmental aspects

Environmental Management System (EMS) - Part of an organisation's management system used to develop and implement its environmental policy and manage its environmental aspects

Environmental Policy - Overall intentions and direction of an organisation related to its environmental performance as formally expressed by top management

Environmental Objectives - Overall environmental goals, consistent with the environmental policy, that an organisation sets itself to achieve

Environmental Targets - Detailed performance requirements, applicable to the organisation, that arise from the environmental objectives and that needs to be set in order to achieve them
